Rev. Father Michael Panakkal
Rev. Father Michael Panakkal, a renowned hymn writer and artist, was born on March 24, 1916, in Mannathupuram, Nayaramplam, Vaippinkara, Ernakulam District, to the parents Panakkal Joseph and Mary.
Education and Early Priesthood
After his education, he joined the Minor Seminary and began his theological studies. He completed his theological education at the Papal Seminary in Kandy, Ceylon. He was ordained a priest on December 19, 1942. His first assignment as a priest was as the vicar of St. Thomas Church, Kodungallur, in the Archdiocese of Varappuzha. In 1944, he served as an assistant vicar at St. Unnimishaha Church, Ernakulam, and also taught at Don Bosco School. He later founded the Bosco Arts Society. Notable musicians such as Rex Isaac, Job and George, Jerry Amaldav, C.J. Anto, and Gopalan, a tabla expert, were his students.
Contributions as a Translator and Artist
Father Michael translated the English book “The Story of the Kingdom of God,” written by Father Antony, into Malayalam under the title “Heavenly Message.” Thousands of copies of this translation were sold. As an artist, Father Michael gained fame for the paintings he created on the walls of various institutions in Ernakulam, which continue to attract attention.
Foundation of Cultural Institutions
He played a significant role in nurturing numerous talents through the Bosco Arts Society, the first organized arts platform in Kochi. He later established the C.A.C. (Cochin Arts and Communications), the first cultural and artistic center in the Kerala Church. The Archdiocese of Varappuzha entrusted Father Michael with the responsibility of starting this institution. Under its aegis, Bible message songs were published in three cassette volumes. In honor of Father Michael’s priestly golden jubilee, a collection of a hundred hymns titled “Madhupratheekshakal” (Sweet Hopes) was published.
Pastoral Work and Other Positions
Father Michael served as a vicar in various parishes, including St. Unnimishaha Church, Chettikav, St. Anthony’s Church, Gothuruthu, St. Sebastian’s Church, Koottukadu, and St. Anthony’s Church, Chennur. He also held several prominent positions, including Manager of the First Industrial School Press (I.S.S. Press) in Kerala, Chaplain at St. Albert’s College, and Director of C.A.C. Under his guidance, C.A.C. made significant contributions to the arts.
Legacy and Achievements
Father Michael Panakkal composed over five hundred songs and released 25 audio cassettes. His work in painting and music has garnered considerable acclaim, and his contributions continue to be recognized and appreciated.
